I have a Dell Inspiron 15 Laptop that came with Windows I recently had to replace the hard drive with a new one and needed to reload Windows The reload portion goes fine, but I am finding that it will not activate the license key. I reloaded the laptop using a Dell Windows 10 re-install disk.
In my experience using Dell re-install disks usually the license activates with no issue. In this case, that doesn't seem to work. It also seems now Dell doesn't list the license key on the back of the machine anymore. I am hoping I am not out of luck and need to re-purchase a new one.
It was Windows 10 Pro and yes I used the install disc that came with it. With laptop out of warranty, Dell will be no help unfortunately. That's not true. They've been able to help with providing OEM images when needed. Was it the Dell disc that came with the laptop? Did the laptop come with Windows 10 Home or Pro, and the disc is different? Product key stickers have been gone since Windows 8. Have you contacted Dell? Is the laptop still under warranty? With WIN10, you should be able to skip the key entry part and Windows will auto activate once it has an internet connection and determines the majority of the hardware stayed the same.
I have noticed in two different instances that once you change some hardware, Windows 10 refuses to activate stating Hardware profile blah blah issue. What seems to work Which I haven't tried in a while so maybe they changed it is activating Windows over the phone. The tool should be available per system tag model regardless of warranty status, the last time i had to use.
